Why it holds up

Automation is only worth having if you can defend the output.

Anyone can make a ledger fast. The question a controller should ask is where the integrity is implemented: in validation a screen performs, or in rules the data itself cannot escape.

At the point of posting

Four ways to write a bad entry, all refused.

Debits must equal credits, checked after currency conversion in the functional currency, so a foreign-currency entry cannot balance in appearance and not in substance. An entry needs at least two lines and two distinct accounts. Amounts cannot be negative.

Posted entries are append-only. Drafts can be deleted; anything posted can only be reversed, and deletion is refused by a database trigger rather than a disabled button. Reverse the same entry twice and the system names the reversal that already exists.

Deactivating an account that has posted activity is refused for the same reason. History does not get tidied away.

Refused at the ledger

Always
  • 01unbalanced: debits 5000 ≠ credits 4500
  • 02a journal entry must touch at least two different accounts
  • 03posted entries are append-only
  • 04Period 2026-07 is locked. Nothing can post into a closed period.
At the close

Eight checks, and a reason recorded if you skip them.

Before a period will close: posted entries exist, the trial balance ties, assets equal liabilities plus equity within a cent, bank items are matched, the checklist is complete, no import is left staged, nothing has been reversed twice, and revenue has not silently collapsed against a material prior month.

Fail one and the close returns the failing list. A partner can override, because deadlines are real, but overriding takes an explicit action and a written reason, and both are recorded against the period.

That is the honest version of a control: not that it can never be bypassed, but that bypassing it leaves a mark.

When it cannot be sure

It says so, instead of producing a number.

Ask for a runway figure on a ledger with too little history and you get told there is not enough data, rather than a confident number derived from two months of noise.

Revaluation refuses to run without a closing rate on file and never falls back to a rate of one. The invariant checks, run against a client nobody has onboarded, report that there is nothing to verify rather than declaring the books clean.

An empty book is not a clean book. That sentence is a verdict the system actually returns, and it is the shortest way to explain the whole design.

Nothing waits in an uncategorised bucket. Where TAI is less than certain it still posts to the account this client's own books support, says why, and puts the row in your queue, so the review list is decisions to confirm, not a suspense account someone has to remember.

Between clients

Every read is scoped to one workspace.

Every query runs inside a tenant scope, and the firm-of-firms hierarchy sits above that. Switching client workspaces is not a filter applied to a shared result set.

Within a workspace, money-typed fields are omitted entirely from responses to people without finance visibility.

Security posture, including where SOC 2 stands today, is set out in full on the security page rather than implied by a badge.

The short version

Move fast on the mechanical. Slow down where it matters.

The system does the repetitive work at speed and stops dead at the places where being wrong is expensive.
